Polar Programmes

Here we list large scale polar programmes led by or with UK involvement:

Antarctica InSync

BIOPOLE – Biogeochemical processes and ecosystem function in changing polar systems and their global impacts (2022 -2026)

Canada-Inuit Nunangat-United Kingdom Arctic Research Programme (2021 -2025)

The International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (2018 – 2023)

MOSAiC

iSTAR – NERC Ice Sheet Stability programme – investigating the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet

NERC Arctic Research Programme   – £15M programme funded by NERC in 2010 which aims to understand and improve our predictions of Arctic change at seasonal to decadal time scales and to establish what the regional and global impacts of such change may be.

NERC Arctic Research Programme: The Changing Arctic Ocean – the new £16M Arctic research programme, funded by NERC in 2015. The programme aims to understand how change in the physical environment (ice and ocean) will affect the large-scale ecosystem structure and biogeochemical functioning of the Arctic Ocean.

UK Ocean Acidification Research Programme

EU Polar programmes:

EU Arctic Cluster Programmes: The EU Arctic Cluster is a network of Horizon 2020 and a Framework Programme 7 funded Arctic projects. Currently it comprises eight projects: APPLICATEARICEBLUE ACTIONEU-PolarNetICE-ARC, iCUPE, INTAROSINTERACT and NUNATARYUK, POLARIN
